A History of the Eureka Inn

Past President of the Historical Society, Arlene Hartin, presents “A History of the Eureka Inn,” at the Humboldt County Historical Society program meeting on Saturday, March 5 at 1:30 p.m., in the first-floor conference room of the Humboldt County Library, 1313 Third Street, Eureka. Admission is free and everyone is invited.

Arlene Hartin will present an overview of the Eureka Inn’s history, and she will introduce you to some of the Inn’s managers, such as Leo Lebenbaum, who was the very first manager, and began his tenure with the announcement that he would host all the county’s poor children for holiday parties until they had all been to the Inn.

Of course, the Eureka Inn was always the favorite stopping place for the rich and famous. Celebrities from Shirley Temple to Truman Capote stayed there, and at least three presidents: Hoover, Ford, and Reagan. In 1938, the cast and crew of the movie “Valley of the Giants” stayed at the Inn. Newspapers from the thirties and forties are filled with the news of the latest Hollywood star or couple to stay at the Eureka Inn.

Hartin will also present several displays, including Christmas tree postcards and assorted photographs of the Inn throughout the years and the people who have been a part of it.

Bring your memories! People are welcome to share their memories of the Eureka Inn at this program, which will celebrate the community activities that have taken place at the Eureka Inn over the years.

Mill Creek Falls 3.4.11

With all the recent rains, I wanted to see how Mill Creek is flowing. So I visited Mill Creek Falls this morning. The falls are located on Turner Road just off Central Avenue south of Kmart. Here’s some video.
