Attention cooks: Sign up for the Clam Chowder Cook-Off

Have you ever watched the culinary competitions on the Food Network, or “Top Chef” on Bravo, and wished you had a similar opportunity to show off your cooking skills?
If so, you still have time to enter the fourth annual Clam Chowder Cook-Off, scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 30 at the McKinleyville Activity Center at Pierson Park. The deadline for signing up has been extended to 5 p.m. Thursday, May 24. For a complete set of rules, entrants should contact the McKinleyville Chamber of Commerce at 839-2449.
The competition is open to professional and amateur cooks, who will be judged separately. To meet Health Department requirements, all chowders must be cooked ahead of time in “approved facilities,” such as kitchens in churches, Granges and schools. Certified restaurant kitchens can also be used.
On the day of the event, participants should bring burners, extension cords, pans, ladles and tables to the event (See the chamber for a complete list.) Set up time is from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Activity Center, 1705 Gwin Road. The chowder should be ready for judges by 5:15 p.m.
The chamber recommends that each participant bring nine to 10 gallons of chowder.
The diners who attend the cook-off will judge all the entries and determine the winners.
Diners will be charged $8 for a bread bowl, $6 for a regular soup bowl and $4 for a kids bowl. They can fill up their bowls, plus they can sample all the different chowders.
Bowls and spoons will be provided by the chamber.
Diners will then turn in a tickets stating which chowder is their favorite.
McKinleyville schools will sell desserts as a fund raiser. Beer and wine will also be available.
The Pilot Rock Ramblers will perform and there will be children’s activities.
The winners in the professional and amateur categories will each receive a plaque. More importantly they’ll have the bragging rights of being declared the best in McKinleyville annual Clam Chowder Cook-off.
