Weather/Freeze Update

Here’s what the National Weather Service in Eureka had to say as of this morning:

AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE EUREKA CA
451 AM PST THU FEB 24 2011

.SYNOPSIS…A COLD WEATHER SYSTEM WILL BRING PERIODIC SHOWERS
AND LOW ELEVATION SNOW SHOWERS THROUGH FRIDAY. DRY BUT COLD
WEATHER IS EXPECTED FOR THE WEEKEND. ANOTHER STORM WILL AFFECT
THE REGION NEXT WEEK WITH HEAVY RAIN AND PERHAPS STRONG WINDS.

&&

.DISCUSSION…OPEN CELLULAR CONVECTION ASSOCIATED WITH A COLD
UPPER LOW OFFSHORE WASHINGTON HAS BEEN SLOWLY SPREADING SOUTHWARD.
BRIEF HEAVY RAIN HAS BEEN OBSERVED…BUT WITH MOST REPORTING
STATIONS SEEING ONLY .10 TO .25 IN THE LAST 6-8 HOURS. ASTORIA
WASHINGTON WHICH IS RIGHT AT SEA LEVEL HAS BEEN REPORTING SNOW AT
30F WHILE NEWPORT OREGON HAD COLD RAIN AT 36F.

SNOW LEVELS ACROSS NW CA HAVE BEEN HOVERING AROUND 1500 TO 2500
FEET OVERNIGHT…AND SHOULD SLOWLY FALL TODAY THROUGH FRIDAY AS
THE COLD AIR MASS SLIDES SOUTHWARD. SNOW SHOULD HIT SEA LEVEL OR
VERY CLOSE TO SEA LEVEL BY EARLY FRIDAY MORNING…AND WE MAY SEE
AN INCH OR TWO IN SPOTS.

NEXT MAJOR THREAT WILL BE FROM THE VERY COLD AIR THAT WILL FILTER
IN AFTER THIS SYSTEM MOVES SOUTH. A HARD FREEZE WATCH…FOR
OVERNIGHT TEMPERATURES OF 29 OR LESS…HAS BEEN POSTED FOR THE
COASTAL LOCATIONS. INLAND AREAS MAY SEE READINGS DIP INTO THE
SINGLE DIGITS AND TEENS. THE WEEKEND IS SHAPING UP TO BE DRY BUT
COLD.

BEEFED UP PRECIP CHANCES ACROSS THE BOARD TUE->THU NEXT WEEK WITH
THE GFS AND ECMWF IN FAIRLY GOOD AGREEMENT ON ANOTHER TROUGH MOVING
TOWARDS THE REGION. IT IS LOOKING MUCH WARMER AND WETTER…HOWEVER
COLD/DRY AIR TRAPPED IN TRINITY COUNTY MAY TAKE A DAY OR TWO TO
SCOUR OUT. DJB

&&

.AVIATION…RADAR SHOWS NUMEROUS RAIN SHOWERS ACROSS NORTHWEST
CALIFORNIA. EXPECT BORDERLINE VFR/MVFR CEILINGS TODAY UNDER SHRA.

&&

.MARINE…LIGHT TO MODERATE WINDS WILL CONTINUE TODAY INTO FRIDAY
AFTERNOON. A MODERATE NW SWELL IN THE 8 TO 10 FT RANGE AT 12 SECONDS
WILL CONTINUE THROUGH THE WEEKEND AND THEN GRADUALLY SUBSIDE. THE
MAIN THING TO WATCH OUT FOR TODAY IS ISOLATED THUNDERSTORMS IN THE
NORTHERN WATERS. INSTABILITY DUE TO COLD AIR MOVING IN ALOFT
COMBINED WITH SOME LOW LEVEL SHEAR MAY BRING THE POTENTIAL FOR
WATERSPOUTS LATE THIS AFTERNOON INTO THIS EVENING…ESPECIALLY
AROUND THE CAPES. THE ODDS AREN`T TOO HIGH, BUT IT`S SOMETHING TO
KEEP AN EYE ON. FOLLOWING THIS, HIGH PRESSURE WILL BUILD INTO THE
REGION FRIDAY NIGHT INTO SATURDAY, BRINGING NEAR GALE FORCE
NORTHERLIES TO THE OUTER WATERS. HELD OFF ON ANY WATCHES AND KEPT
THE SCA GOING BECAUSE THE UNCERTAINTY FOR BOTH THE GALE INTENSITY
AND COVERAGE REMAINS HIGH. REGARDLESS, COMBINED SEAS WILL BUILD INTO
THE 11 TO 13 FT RANGE ACROSS THE OUTER WATERS DURING THIS TIME
PERIOD. WINDS AND SEAS WILL DECREASE ON SUNDAY AS THE PRESSURE
GRADIENT WEAKENS. AN APPROACHING FRONT WILL CHANGE THE WINDS TO
SOUTHERLY ON MONDAY. STROZ
