The McKinleyville Varsity Girls Basketball team has climbed into the top 10 in the state among Division 4 teams, and are currently the top ranked public school in the state in Division 4.
Ranked 10th overall, the Lady Panthers are No. 2 in Northern California, behind the team that put them out of the State Tournament last year, St. Mary’s of Albany. McKinleyville (20-2) plays Fortuna on Tuesday, and will host the Arcata Tigers for their Senior Night on Thursday.
Meanwhile, the Freshman and Junior Varsity girls are also having successfull seasons, both are in second place in league with 4-1 records pending Tuesdays games against Fortuna.
The Freshman team (11-7 overall) is led by guards Brittany Meagher and Ivy Bartley, as well as a trio of post players, Kaila Cain, Brittany Boyd, and Katelyn Jones. Miranda Hansen, Tori Laidlaw, and Leilani Harling have also stepped up to play key roles for the young Panthers.
The JV team is 15-6 overall, and riding a 4 game winning streak into their showdown with division leading Fortuna. The team features a balanced scoring attack featuring Sophomores Kellie McDonald, Talena Ruiz, and Mallorie Kiff, along with Freshmen Brittany Ward and Kelsi Clary. Ashley Egbert, Dayna Bubenik, and Darby Dutra also see plenty of playing time and are valuable contributors.
The division races are heating up, so come out and support the teams as the Lady Panthers Varsity go for their 7th straight league title.
