Another reason to take the Newton B. Drury Scenic Parkway

When traveling north through Redwood National and State Parks, you have two choices. You can take the bypass and drive at freeway speeds, or you can slow down to 45 mph and take the Newton B. Drury Scenic Parkway.

I usually take the parkway. It’s prettier and easier on your vehicle. There’s another reason to take the parkway – the road signs are more entertaining.

Look for crossing Bigfoots.

I can’t tell if this is a surfboard or a hula-hoop.

I figured this driver was giving a one-finger salute until I took a closer look. Groovy, man.

  1. Ha! We always take the Newton P. Surprises me, too, that the cars we see on the highway when we exit are the same cars we see when we hop back on at the end – so timewise, it all works out the same.

The scenic route is actually about 11 miles shorter than the freeway and that is why it works out that the slower speed gets you there just as fast. With gas prices, the scenic route is pretty flat compared to the freeway except for the last couple of miles so I would think that would be the preferred way to go. At times tourists with large RV’s hold up traffic in the summer but that gives me more time to look around.

  3. I like to ride my bike north on the Parkway. For me, it is a very challenging ride up a very steady incline, and then you have an up hill at the end before you drop down to the highway. Then turnaround and go back up the hill. It is downhill most of the way back.

Also, it’s fun to see the tourists gawking at the redwoods. That’s when we yell out the window…”Watch out for Bigfoot!”

  5. The Newton B. Drury Scenic Parkway is a great way to go, north or southbound.

I was unaware of the sign improvements. This seems like a worthy endeavor for CalTrans.

    God bless those highway engineers.
