All sorts of stuff that you need to know about

Last night’s meeting of the McKinleyville Community Services District was a Skate Park Smackdown. There were about 60 people in attendance, which is a massive turnout for just about anything in McKinleyville.

As a demonstration of everyone’s commitment, they sat through the district’s annual Audit Report, perhaps the most boring snorefest you can imagine. A representative of Hunter, Hunter & Hunt droned on, saying stuff like “In our opinion, the financial statements referred to above present fairly, in all material respects, the respective financial position of the governmental activities, the business-type activities, each major fund and the aggregate…” at which point I started daydreaming about the 1964 Thunderbird I recently saw on Craiglist – with a pristine white paint job and red leather interior. I imagined myself cruising with my wife by my side down Clam Beach Road on a sunny Humboldt Day, windows down, the air perfumed by the yellow lupines, an old song crackling on the radio…

“I refer you to page 40 and 41,” the auditor continued, and I snapped back to reality. I better pay attention. There might be something important in the audit, but there wasn’t. The MCSD “passed” the audit, more or less, which doesn’t mean a lot one way or another. No red flags.

But back to the skate park. Everyone who spoke last night said they supported the skate park. The McKinleyville Skate Park Organization now has a temporary right-of-entry agreement. That means the MCSD is continuing to offer land for the park, just not a specific location. The matter is now being referred to the Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee (RAC). For some reason, the issue bypassed the committee during the first round. The RAC will make a recommendation and the entire issue will return to the MCSD board in 90 days. So we’ll hear more about that about the time we start thinking about planting our gardens.
