The first in a series of strong storm systems will begin to influence northwest California Tuesday night, January 17, as strong southerly winds develop ahead of an advancing frontal system. Wind gusts up to 45 mph will occur along the coast Tuesday night into Wednesday while gusts exceeding 60 mph can be expected at higher elevations of Humboldt and Del Norte counties. At the same time, heavy rain will expand across all of northwestern California late Tuesday night into Wednesday and then continue into the weekend as multiple storm system influence the region. Total rainfall through Saturday will range from 4 to 8 inches with locally higher amounts over 11 inches in preferred locations such as the King Range, Siskiyou Mountains, and South Fork Mountain.
