Will fog burn off?

Fog was thick this morning in the Arcata Bottom, above. The fog was supposed to burn off, but as of 11:30 a.m., it’s still thick at McK Press headquarters on Central Avenue.

Raw from the NWS:

AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE EUREKA CA
308 AM PDT WED MAR 30 2011

.SYNOPSIS…STRONG HIGH PRESSURE WILL BUILD INTO THE REGION
TODAY…RESULTING IN WARMER AND DRIER WEATHER THROUGH FRIDAY.
ANOTHER WEAK SYSTEM WILL BRING A CHANCE OF SHOWERS TO THE AREA ON
SATURDAY.

&&

.DISCUSSION…WEAK FLOW AND RESIDUAL MOISTURE IS THE PERFECT
COMBINATION FOR COASTAL FOG THIS MORNING. AS HIGH PRESSURE EXPANDS
EASTWARD FROM THE CENTRAL PAC…CLOUDS SHOULD CLEAR TODAY FOR
MOST AREAS AS UPPER LEVEL MOISTURE IS SHUNTED TO THE NE.
SUBSTANTIAL WARMING ALOFT OCCURS TODAY…AND EVEN MORE SO ON THU.
H85 TEMPS PEAK AROUND 16C IN MENDOCINO CO…TRANSLATING TO TEMPS
IN THE 70S TO NEAR 80…ABOUT 10 TO 15 DEGREES ABOVE NORMAL FOR
THIS TIME OF YEAR. WITH THE WARMING COMES THE DEVELOPMENT OF A
THERMAL TROUGH ACROSS THE INTERIOR. THIS IN COMBINATION WITH HIGH
PRESSURE OFFSHORE WILL LEAD TO INCREASING NORTH WINDS OFFSHORE.
THIS PATTERN IS REMINISCENT OF SUMMER…AND AM CONCERNED THAT
COASTAL STRATUS MAY DEVELOP AND HANG TOUGH THE NEXT TWO MORNINGS.
I BEEFED UP CLOUDS AND BROUGHT IN FOG ALONG THE COAST…BUT
CONFIDENCE IN THIS SCENARIO IS NOT REAL HIGH.

THE RIDGE AXIS CROSSES THE AREA EARLY FRI AS A TROUGH DROPS OUT OF
THE GULF OF ALASKA. MODELS HAVE SLOWED DOWN THE PROGRESSION OF
THIS TROUGH DUE TO THE STRENGTH OF THE RIDGE. TEMPS COOL ON SAT
WITH TROUGH PASSAGE ALONG WITH A CHANCE FOR SHOWERS. ANOTHER RIDGE
POKES UP BEHIND THE TROUGH ON SUN…AND PERSISTS INTO MON. THE
RIDGE FLATTENS BY TUE…WITH THE POSSIBILITY OF ANOTHER WEAK
TROUGH COMING AT US FROM THE NORTHWEST. JCA

Humboldt County Sheriff’s Deputies arrested an Arcata man yesterday after receiving reports that he had made threats against students and faculty at Blue Lake Elementary School. At about 1:30 pm, school officials called 911 and reported a man near the campus was yelling and threatening to kill students. The caller provided a description of the man and added that the suspect had walked away from the school. Deputies located the man a short distance from the school and detained him. School personnel confirmed that the man, Dylan Wilson, 23, had walked past the school and yelled threats at a teacher who was escorting a group of first-graders. Have you seen this guy?

Humboldt County Sheriff’s Deputies are searching for a suspect involved in an assault last night. At about 9 p.m. deputies were called to a residence on the 300 block of View Avenue in Trinidad for a reported assault. Upon their arrival, deputies learned that two Trinidad men, Mark Livesay, 36, and Sanford Vonladwig, 32, had become involved in a physical fight. Below are just some of the articles in this week’s edition:

• Logging planned near Strawberry Rock in Trinidad.

• McKinleyville Little League to hold opening ceremonies Saturday, Find out who will throw the first pitch.

• Westhaven ponders a new fire assessment, which could impact homeowners’ insurance bills.

• Planning Commissioner resigns – again.

• Stone Lagoon breaches for the first time since 2008.

• Planners told that protecting fish could harm local farmers.

• Supervisors approve polarized Coastal Commission nominees.

• Tree planting volunteer day planned near Mad River. There’s also a Hammond Trail cleanup day.

• The McKinleyville Press always prints a lot of community news about local kids doing well in school, people winning awards, etc. You may have noticed the McKinleyville Matters column, which is a potpourri of local news. That column dates back to at least the 1970s, maybe earlier. I was told that the late Mrs. Rameyused to write the column. Later, Mrs Wilkins wrote. The column appeared in the Arcata Union, which went out of business in 1995 – the year before the McKinleyville Press was launched. If you have a family member celebrating a birthday, anniversary, etc., send us information for the McKinleyville Matters column, which is now compliled by McK Press staff. Let’s keep this tradition going.

• By the way, tucked in that column is some interesting information about Horizon Air and its decision to stop serving the McKinleyville Airport. It would appear that the airline has contradicted itself on more than one occasion.

• On the opinion page there’s commentary about the situation at Clam Beach.

There’s much more in this week’s edition, so get a copy today.
