Another Missing Person

Just in from the Sheriff’s Dept:

The Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office is searching for a Eureka man who has not been heard from since February 11, 2011. Jeremiah Holland Jones, 22, was reported missing by concerned relatives who added that it was extremely unusual for Jones to be out of contact with his family. Jones may have been driving a 1986 gray Lincoln sedan; that vehicle was recovered, abandoned near the intersection of Nevada and Harris Street in Eureka.

Jones is a white adult male, about 5’10” tall, weighing 155 pounds. He has blue eyes and short blonde hair. Jones has several tattoos including “Only God Can Judge Me” on his abdomen and “Mom” on his right wrist.

Anybody with information regarding the whereabouts of Jeremiah Jones should call the Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office at (707) 445-7251.

Pet of the Week

Every week in the McKinleyville Press, Humboldt County Animal Shelter Correspondent Jean Durbin writes about adoptable animals. Jean is one of Humboldt County’s unsung heroes. Writing the column is only a tiny fraction of the hard work she does every week to help Humboldt’s abandoned animals.

Jean typically submits blurbs on about a dozen or so animals a week, and we try to squeeze as many of them in every issue. Pick up a copy today to read about them and see their photos. From now on, we’ll try to include at least one animal on this blog every week. Here’s the first:

SCARLET: She is sweet girl is waiting for a good home where she can enjoy the company of humans who want to give her the good home she deserves. Scarlet, like almost every other County Shelter dog has been given a bum steer in life so far, yet keeps her trust in humans intact and is ready to give her heart and soul to someone who will love her. Winter Weather Advisory! Snow on Friday?

We could get snow at sea level on Friday. It’s interesting that in the past, the snow was thicker at McKinleyville International Airport than it was down the street in the area of Murray and Hiller. Just an observation.

Here’s an advisory in “all caps” from the NWS:

…WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY IN EFFECT FROM 6 AM THURSDAY TO MIDNIGHT PST THURSDAY NIGHT…

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN EUREKA HAS ISSUED A WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY ABOVE 500 FEET FOR SNOW WHICH IS IN EFFECT FROM 6 AM THURSDAY TO MIDNIGHT PST THURSDAY NIGHT.

* SNOW ACCUMULATION OF 2 TO 4 INCHES IS EXPECTED FROM MID MORNING THURSDAY THROUGH THURSDAY NIGHT BETWEEN 1500 AND 3000 FEET. HIGHER SNOW ACCUMULATION IS EXPECTED ABOVE 3000 FEET.

* 1 TO 2 INCHES OF SNOW WILL BE POSSIBLE DOWN TO 500 FEET THURSDAY AND THURSDAY NIGHT. SNOW MAY BRIEFLY REACH SEA LEVEL AND THE VALLEY FLOORS BUT NO ACCUMULATION IS EXPECTED.

A WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY FOR SNOW MEANS THAT PERIODS OF SNOW WILL CAUSE PRIMARILY TRAVEL DIFFICULTIES. BE PREPARED FOR SNOW COVERED ROADS AND LIMITED VISIBILITIES…AND USE CAUTION WHILE DRIVING.

WARNING: Fraudulent traveler’s checks

Raw press release from EPD:

On 2/22/11, a representative from Coast Central Credit Union (CCCU) contacted the Eureka Police Department regarding a recent rash of counterfeit traveler’s check’s they’ve received from unaware customers.

CCCU reported that last night and today (2/21 and 2/22/2011) they received several fraudulent Visa AAA (triple A) traveler’s checks all bearing serial number 1572302515166. Unwitting employees from several businesses at the Bayshore Mall accepted the traveler’s checks as payment for merchandise and later brought them to CCCU to deposit. The traveler’s checks were then determined by credit union employees to be fake.

According to credit union representatives, the as of yet unidentified suspect(s) used military I.D. to pass the false checks, which were all in $100.00 denominations. The fake checks appeared to have been printed on heavy paper with an inkjet printer, which is noticeable upon close examination.

CCCU urges all businesses accepting Visa AAA traveler’s checks not to accept ones bearing the above listed serial number. CCCU also urges sales clerks to require and carefully check proper identification from customer’s using such traveler’s checks.

Planning Commission meeting cancelled

The Wednesday, Feb. 24 meeting of the Humboldt County Planning Commission is cancelled. Instead, you can stay home and watch Survivor, which has some similarities to a Planning Commission meeting, but is less brutal.
