In this week’s edition (Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2011)

Land use planning isn’t the sexiest topic, but it’s pretty darn important – especially for McKinleyville. As you’ve read, the county is proposing to rezone properties to allow for high density development.

So this week’s newspaper has plenty of news and commentary related to the issue.

There’s an article about the possibility of McKinleyville having its own planning commission. There’s coverage of the Valentine’s Day planning workshop, during which residents expressed their outrage over the rezoning proposal. There’s coverage of the county Planning Commission, which is discussing snubbing state housing demands.

There are some thoughtful letters about the topic, as well as several letters regarding Measure B.

Also in this edition:

• Couple faces charges for Trinidad tree chopping

• Grim cuts to the county budget

• MCSD may raise sewer and water hookup fees, which seem to be so low that they raise a question – have ratepayers been subsidizing new development for the past decade or two?

• Headwaters Fund has more money in it now than when it was created.

• Some punk slashed a bunch of tires in the Heartwood Subdivision and was caught.

• Girl Scouts are selling cookies. Look for them this weekend at Safeway, Ray’s and Kmart.

There’s much more. Pick up a copy today or subscribe.

Total McK rainfall close to normal

So far this weather season, which began July 1, McKinleyville rainfall is about as close to normal as one can expect. As of Sunday, the NWS recorded 25.37 inches at the airport. Normal is 25.57 inches. Last year at the same time we received 22.59. Each week, after the paper goes to press, I upload the weekly weather chart onto the McK Press website. FYI.

Tom Marking on Measure B

You may recall Tom Marking, the former manager of the McKinleyville Community Services District. While he was manager, he got so fed up with the McKinleyville Press that he canceled the MCSD’s subscription.

He’s back in the paper in the coming edition with a letter to the editor criticizing the MCSD for its handling of Measure B, the property tax that funds recreation and will be used to build a teen center and more. Tom disagrees with how the MCSD has portrayed the tax and how it’s going about extending the assessment.

You can read what Tom thinks in the coming issue. You can also read many more letters from people who support Measure B, including three students from McKinleyville Middle School who want a teen center.
